Rose Garden Ceremony & Birthday Cake: Eleanor Roosevelt's Birthday

The National Park Service will hold a Rose Garden ceremony to commemorate Eleanor Roosevelt's Birthday. Afterwards, the FDR Presidential Library will invite visitors to the Wallace Center for birthday cake and refreshments. This is a free public event.

This paperweight was carved from a piece of Bonneville Dam foundation rock by Martin L. Smith, a dragline operator for the Columbia Construction Co. in Portland, Oregon. FDR kept it for a time on his White House Oval Office desk:
On September 21, 1939, FDR urged Congress to repeal provisions of the Neutrality Act that proclaimed an embargo on the sale of arms, munitions and airplanes and other war materials for “belligerents” in the European War.
We're sure some of you are watching the excellent "The US and the Holocaust" documentary by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, and Sarah Botstein currently on PBS. There is perhaps no issue from the Roosevelt period that generates as much interest, research, and controversy as the US response to the Holocaust. Our Morgenthau Holocaust Collections Project creates new possibilities for in-depth research in this field.
