Henry A. Wallace Center
This weekend-long Veteran Arts Showcase features works by local artists, photographers, and authors with military backgrounds. The event will kick-off with a reception on Friday, November 18, at 5:30 pm, followed by two full days (November 19 and 20) of exhibits, presentations, and performances.
Historian Stephen Ortiz discusses World War I veterans and their efforts to organize into a political interest group, examining the benefits veterans secured, including state pensions and bonuses, and the effect they had on the New Deal era.
Many of FDR’s admirers sent him handmade gifts. Twenty-year-old Ernestine Guerrero of San Antonio, Texas created this hand-carved wooden clock case for the President and sent it to him in October 1937.
Every year on November 11th people all over the world honor and thank those who served their country. Today in the United States November 11th is known as Veterans Day, but until 1954 it was Armistice Day, honoring the millions who had served or been killed in World War I. The killing had ended on the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
"Whatever our individual circumstances or opportunities, we are all in it, and our spirit is good... and do not let anyone tell you anything different." FDR, Oct 12, 1942, fireside chat.
