Picnicking with the Roosevelts: Baskets, Blankets and Diplomacy
The Roosevelt Library hosts an encore virtual presentation of "Picnicking with the Roosevelts: Baskets, Blankets, and Diplomacy" with Library Education Specialist Jeff Urbin. Learn how the Roosevelts found comfort and relief from the suffering and uncertainty of the Great Depression and World War II through the simple act of picnicking with family, friends, and royalty.
Mary Stuckey, author and professor of communication at Georgia State University, examines FDR's mastery of radio, how he used it to bypass the press and speak directly to Americans, and how his calm, conversational approach helped him reach people in a way no previous President had.

Long before GPS, sailors found their way by using the stars and a tool called a sextant. An accomplished sailor, FDR appreciated the stars for their usefulness in navigation and their beauty. When was the last time you took a really good look at the stars?
This is the story behind a small group of objects that are not the type of things you normally expect to find at a Presidential library: a dog’s food bowl, a rubber ball and a stuffed sock. So what can these objects possibly have to do with Franklin Roosevelt? They all belonged to a dog, named Fala, who belonged to FDR and lived at the White House.
The National Park Service utilizes goats to help viewshed clearing and the removal of invasive species in areas where it may not be safe for employees to work (like steep slopes). Goats are not only cute but very effective!
