On the morning of April 12,1945, Vice President Harry S. Truman had been virtually unknown. By bedtime, just 83 days after taking office, he became Commander in Chief of the Allied Forces. This session examines FDR's most significant Veep.

South Asian poets Pramila Venkateswaran and Zilka Joseph will give a live reading in the lobby of the Wallace Center as part of the "Stream of Life" series produced by Stephanie JT Russell, Dutchess County Poet Laureate. Hosted by the FDR Library and the Home of FDR National Historic Site.

World War II Military Displays

FDR Library Great Lawn

 

In honor of Memorial Day Weekend, the Great Lawn in front of the FDR Library will take on the appearance of a World War II encampment with WWII military displays, soldiers in battle dress and period military vehicles of all sizes.

 

Be sure to visit the Hyde Park Education Foundation's Fifth Annual Field of Honor® next door at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site throughout the weekend.

President Roosevelt and the German Invasion of the Low Countries

 

Nazi forces attacked the Low Countries – The Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg – on May 10th, 1940. The invasions had not come as a complete surprise, for Germany had been at war with Great Britain and France since the previous September and had invaded Denmark and Norway in April.
