The FDR Presidential Library presents the 2023 Paul M. Sparrow Lecture: a conversation and book signing with Jonathan Darman, author of BECOMING FDR: THE PERSONAL CRISIS THAT MADE A PRESIDENT. Journalist and historian Jonathan examines how midlife infection from the polio virus upended Franklin Roosevelt's life, transformed his character, and created his powers as an inspiring and compassionate leader.
This is a free public event, but registration is required.
Jonathan Darman is a journalist and historian who writes about American politics and the presidency. He is the author of the books BECOMING FDR: The Personal Crisis that Made a President and LANDSLIDE: Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan at the Dawn of a New America. Jonathan studied American history and literature at Harvard University. He lives in Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley.

During WWII, the patriotic celebration on July 4th was widespread, both at home and overseas. Although it was a day of observance, troops went on fighting to protect and defend the liberties that we commemorate on Independence Day.
Author Jim Noles tells the story of the undefeated 1944 West Point basketball team that never made it to the championship tournament because its stars were called to war.
We are proud to announce this exhibit has received a 2023 Award for Excellence from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network.
A special exhibition developed in collaboration with a distinguished committee of scholars that centers on the historical voices of many Black community leaders, wartime service members, and ordinary citizens who engaged the Roosevelt administration directly and who pushed for progress. Within this context, the exhibit examines the political evolution of both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt regarding racial justice.
In this first-ever look across the entirety of the war effort, author Nicholas Reynolds combines little-known history and gripping spy stories to analyze the origins of American codebreakers and spies as well as their contributions to Allied victory, revealing how they laid the foundation for the Cold War — and beyond. FDR purchased this painting by Emanuel Leutze at the American Art Association auction in January 1926. FDR sent Louis Howe to the auction with instructions to pay no more than $150.
